South Aston Orienteering Group

The South Aston Orienteering Group was formed a few years ago to take our intrepid explorers to parts of the Midlands and further afield not visited before …. The Group has recently re-launched under the superb guidance and direction of Roger Tempest and has already completed 3 tours, Broadway, The Lickeys and Clent Hills.

If you are interested and would like to join us, please speak to Roger or Lynn

The Ascent of Clent

A gripping account of human survival against the odds

At 10.33 hours on 9th December 2022 the team assembled for their most audacious mission so far, a daring winter assault on the twin peaks of Clent.  The team, hardened by their previous exploits on the Cotswolds and Lickey Hills, consisted of Lynn, Graham, Roger, ‘Sherpa’ Billy, and Sarah who knows someone who walked in the Himalayas; however, nothing could prepare them for the perils and hardship they were about to endure.

Arriving at the Clent car park the team realised there was not a moment to lose of the brief winter daylight, and resisting the temptations of the cafe began their assault on Clent Hill.  Arriving at the summit near the Standing Stones the view was spectacular, and it was a sunny but frosty day that showed the colours of nature at their most appealing; maybe the beauty of the surroundings gave a false sense of security, because a bit further on the path fell precipitately and so did Roger, sliding halfway down a near-precipice.  The situation was indeed critical, as he had the car keys and therefore the only means of survival and return to civilisation!  Thankfully he called on his inner Edmund Hilary and made it back to the summit.

Taking a less adventurous path, we made it up Walton Hill, stopped for a sandwich break and trekked back to the cafe where Billy bought us all a coffee and mince pie, richly deserved!

Watch this space for our next adventure!!

Roger Tempest
